There are well established types of horse races, and there are the up-and-comers. One example of a relative newcomer on the scene would be Arabian racing, which has only been established in the United States with regular professional races for a decade or two. The thoroughbred horse race, of course, has probably been around the longest, with the harness race existing for almost as long. But standing somewhere in between is the quarter horse race, which runs on a flat track a quarter mile long.
Both the quarter horse race and the thoroughbred horse race are subsets of the type of racing that is most popular in the United States, known as flat racing. This simply signifies that these races are run on flat tracks, oval for the thoroughbreds and straight for the quarter horses, as opposed to something like a harness race that has banked curves. But even though both thoroughbreds and quarter horses are very fast, their racing style is quite different. Thoroughbreds have to pace themselves, and turn on the speed when it really counts. Quarter horses, on the other hand, run their races at top speed from beginning to end.
While you can find thoroughbred horse racing proliferating all over the world, the quarter horse race is not yet quite as prevalent. There are efforts being made, though, to increase its popularity in several other countries. For example, in early March of 2008, the first Australian Quarter Horse Racing National Conference was held in southwestern Victoria, with five members of the corresponding American association attending along with the Australian delegates. The stated goal of this conference was to discuss ways to try to expand Australian horse racing to increase the interest in and number of quarter horse races in that country.
Quarter horse racing has been around for quite a while, but it has taken longer to become popular, especially outside North America. The thoroughbred horse race is still the darling of the racing world, having taken root in Europe as well as in Japan, which one might consider rather an unlikely place for it to become so popular. But the Quarter horse is making itself known, and this very powerful, very swift runner will no doubt stay hot on the heels of its thoroughbred cousins.
